Private Pilot Requirements

The Private Pilot Training Program at Spring City Aviation is based on the regulations established by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), but is structured around each individual student. FAA regulations require the following:

General Requirements:
  1. 1.Be at least 17 years of age.
  2. 2.Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language.
  3. 3.Obtain a Third Class Medical Certificate
  4. 4.Pass the required knowledge and practical exams.

Aeronautical Experience:
Minimum of 40 hours of flight time, which includes:
  1. 20 hours of flight training from an instructor:
    1. 3 hours of cross-country training
    2. 3 hours of instrument training
    3. 3 hours of night training, including
      • One cross-country of at least 100nm total distance
      • 10 takeoffs and landings
  2. 10 hours of solo flight time, including:
    1. 5 hours solo cross-country, which must include:
      • at least one solo cross-country of at least 150nm total distance with a landing at a minimum of three points
    2. 10 takeoffs and landings at an airport with an operating control tower

This obviously does not add up to 40 hours, so the remaining time is at the discretion of the instructor and the student.
