Instrument Rating

Brief Description:  A rating that allows the holder to fly by sole reference to the aircrafts's instruments. Teaches a greater mastery of aircraft control, systems, and advanced navigation. Permits flights under Instrument Flight Rules(IFR).

Basic Requirements:
  • Hold at least a private pilot certificate.
  • Be able to read, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Hold at least a valid third-class medical certificate.
  • Have a minimum of 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument flight.
  • Receive a minimum of 15 hours of instrument flight training.
  • Pass a knowledge test as well as the practical test.

In addition to the minimum training times required, in order to apply for the Instrument - Airplane practical test, pilots will need a minimum of 50 hours of Pilot-In-Command cross-country times logged. This time can be accumulated during training, as well as on your own.
